The Social Tiles brings people together through American Mahjong. We offer lessons, leagues, and private events across Chicago’s North Shore, creating welcoming spaces for players of all skill levels, from brand-new beginners to active enthusiasts. Our goal is simple: make mahjong feel approachable, social, and fun, while building a community around thoughtful play and meaningful connection.

New to mahjong? Mahj 101 is our beginner-friendly introduction to American Mah Jongg, designed to help you learn the basics in a warm, approachable, and hands-on way.
We’ll cover the history of the game, the tiles, racks, the NMJL card, the deal, the Charleston, game flow, etiquette, and the core rules you need to start playing. Our goal is to give you a solid foundation and, whenever possible, get you playing a game before the session ends.

Ready for things to really start clicking? Mahj 102 is a guided play session designed for players who know the basics but want more confidence at the table.
We’ll practice the full ritual of the game, including the deal, Charleston, game etiquette, choosing and focusing on a line, live-game strategy, and hands-on decision making. Throughout the session, you’ll play real games with table-side coaching, personalized tips, and gentle guidance to help you feel more comfortable, strategic, and ready to play on your own.

We Are The Social Tiles.
We started The Social Tiles because we wanted a weekly ritual that felt like ours.
Time with friends. A reason to get out. A way to challenge our brains while somehow giving them a break. Because if you play mahjong, you get it. The game asks you to focus so completely that, for a few hours, all the other tabs in your brain finally quiet down.
At the heart of it, we are three women who love mahjong and, selfishly, want more people to love it too.
We created The Social Tiles to make American Mahjong feel approachable, social, and a little more elevated. Through lessons, leagues, private events, and group experiences, we bring people together around the table for thoughtful play, real connection, and a standing date to use our brains for something fun.
We primarily serve Chicago and the North Shore suburbs, including Glenview and surrounding communities, and are available to travel to many Chicagoland suburbs.
